Position SummaryThe Cardiovascular Operating Room Nurse is
responsible for circulating in theoperating room and assisting
physicians with advanced tasks or equipment duringsurgical
procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung
machineuse, trans-esophageal echocardiogram studies, cardiac output
assistive devices,and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR
RN must have the ability toperform and interpret various cardiac
and vascular lab tests. The CVOR RN mustbe able to work under high
pressure in a fast-paced environment. You will applygood
interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and
non-verbalskills to achieve organizational service goals of
customer satisfaction and apositive work environment. The position
requires the ability to be conscientious,organized, and orderly and
the ability to respond quickly to the needs of thesurgeon and
patient. This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates
anddocuments nursing care of patients in accordance with
organizational policies andin accordance with standards of
professional nursing practice utilizing theframework for
professional nursing practice and development. This position is
accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self
or others who areunder their direction. This position utilizes
specialized knowledge, judgment, andnursing skills necessary to
assess data and plan, provide and evaluate careappropriate to the
physical and developmental age of assigned
patients.Responsibilities1. Prepares for surgical procedures by
completing assessment of the patient andreviewing patient chart,
diagnostics, and labs. Reports abnormal results tophysicians and
other appropriate care givers. Reviews patient history and
physicaland consent forms and assures completion.2. Formulates and
initiates plan of care based on patient specific needs andmedical
plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with members
ofmultidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to
reflect changes inpatient needs. Provides care based on physician
orders and in compliance withpolicies and procedures, standards of
care, and regulatory agency requirements.Delegates appropriately
and provides nursing supervision in the provision of careto
patients by other licensed nurses and other personnel. Promotes
continuity ofcare by accurately and completely communicating to
other caregivers the statusof patients for whom care is provided.3.
Prepares for surgical procedure by ensuring all appropriate
supplies andinstruments are available and room set up is
appropriate. Troubleshootsmalfunctioning equipment and makes minor
adjustments or calls biomedicalequipment staff. Checks schedule and
plans ahead for upcoming surgical caseneeds.4. Documents surgical
procedure in the patient record. Documentation is timelyand in
accordance with policy. Notes physician orders accurately and in a
timelymanner.5. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique
and universal precautionsthroughout the procedure. Participates in
counting sharps, instruments, andsponges. Disposes of sharps and
trash appropriately in designated areas.6. Ensures that all surgeon
preference cards are accurate.7. Assists with OR turnover between
cases. Participates in stocking, replenishingsupplies and cleaning
operating rooms.8. Participates in or leads the training and
orientation of surgical staff andstudents, as assigned.
9. This position follows safety procedures regarding medication
labeling,appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of
sharps, time-outprocedure, radiation and laser safety, and
infection control.
Minimum education: Associates Degree in NursingPreferred Education:
Bachelor's Degree in NursingMinimum experience: One year of
operating room experience in the acute caresettingPreferred
experience: 1 year in CVOR settingRequired licenses/certifications:
Current, valid RN license in the state of practice,BLS
certification, ACLS certificationHours per week: 40 hoursOn call
requirement: STAR program
STAR Program Defined:
An employee in the STAR program is guaranteed 80 hours of regular
pay. This is for 40 hours of workhours at the facility and for 80
hours of on-call shifts. Program participation consists of five
8-hr workshifts and five 16-hour on-call shifts per pay period. For
example, each Monday through Friday in a payperiod would either
consist of on-site work 8-hour shift or a 16 hour on-call shift.
